Askaci: what we do differently
- Ani, an AI tutor you chat with in writing or out loud, who corrects kindly and whispers answers when you get stuck. Scenes like the café, the taxi, or a visit to grandma’s.
- Your community of origin: Ani adapts her conversations to your family’s Armenian, Eastern or Western.
- Culture, not just words: a section on Armenian history and traditions in the app.
- Five interface languages: French, English, Spanish, Turkish, Russian.
Askaci’s limits
- The lessons and their audio follow Eastern Armenian; Western Armenian goes through Ani.
- The audio is a synthetic voice, not a recording of speakers.
- No detailed grammar sheets yet (in preparation).
- Ani is limited to 5 messages per day on the free plan.
LearnArmenia: what it does well
- A daily plan and reviews, in the browser, on iOS and Android.
- A grammar section with rules and exercises, and an online dictionary.
- Per its site, recordings by speakers and a free plan to start.
Its limits, per its site: Eastern Armenian only, no free conversation described, and an interface in English and Russian.
Pimsleur: what it does well
Audio lessons of about 30 minutes where you listen, repeat and answer out loud, with separate Eastern and Western courses, per its product page. It is mostly designed for the ear: plan another tool for reading and free conversation.
What about a teacher?
An app prepares, a person consolidates. Nothing replaces someone who corrects you live, out loud: many learners combine an app for consistency and a relative or a teacher for speaking.
How to choose
- Your family speaks Western Armenian: Pimsleur has a dedicated Western course; with Askaci, lessons are in Eastern and Ani practices Western. Read understanding Western Armenian while learning Eastern.
- You mainly want to answer your family: start with speaking Armenian with your family.
- You are starting from zero: the alphabet first, whichever app you use.
- You are unsure which variant: Eastern or Western.
